Use of Google Sites

Go to sites.google.com and open a new site by choosing one of the options above: use a template or start from scratch. You can switch to the regular Google Sites editor at the bottom left of this page, but this tutorial explains how to use the new editor.

What-is-Google-Site

Since my cats need to improve their site, I'm making them a demo site. When creating your website, use the preview option in the upper right corner to see how your website will look on different devices.

The header of the Website

Every new Google Sites page starts with ready-made headers. In the upper left corner of the header is a field that says Enter Website Name. The name you enter here will appear on your site, but you can give your site a private name on the main Google Sites page where you can edit your sites.

When you hover over a website name, you can add a logo that appears to the left of the name. It's small, so use a simple, clear image.

To edit the header, go to the bottom left corner of the header. Select an image to use as a background, then choose from four headers: cover, large banner, banner, or header only. The first three options will display your background image in different sizes, while the last one will only use the title text.

In the lower right corner of the section, there are image adjustments to improve the readability of the header, and you can choose where to attach the image (center). The size of the Google Sites header is not specified. Instead, it takes your image and adjusts it to different resolutions depending on where you anchor it. I recommend using the highest possible resolution and then using the preview option to check how your title looks on different devices.

After deciding on the size of the banner and background image, work on the header. Click on it to change its style, size, font, and alignment. Drag the dots at the top of the text box to move the box left or right (but not up or down). Or delete it if you don't want the text.

Select Theme for GoogleSite

To customize the appearance of your website, click on the Themes tab at the top of the right menu. Each theme comes with a number of preset color schemes and fonts.

Looking for more control? Click the icon under the Custom category to create your own theme, which Google Sites saves for later use. You can customize the fonts and colors to your liking.

Add text and media on Google Site

Adding text and media to Google Sites:

Time to learn about the building blocks of Google Sites websites. Click the Add tab on the right sidebar to add the following elements to your site.

  •  Basics: At the top of the Insert menu, you can add a text field or images, insert HTML code, or add files from Google Drive.
  •  Content Blocks: These ready-made text and images save time adding and organizing individual elements.
  •  Collapsible Group: A collapsible group consists of a title with collapsible text lines below it. You can turn any combination of title and body text into a collapsible group by clicking the Collapsible toggle that appears when you click their text boxes.
  •  Content: Google's Site Tables automatically create links that jump to different sections of your site using the text in each section. You can delete items, but you cannot add them.
  •   Image Carousels: Add two or more images to an image carousel where you can navigate using the dots below it or automatically cycle through the images.
  •  Buttons: Create a link that selects the font and colors from your theme. Hubs: Google Sites creates simple hubs with a design based on the theme you choose.
  •  Placeholders: The placeholders section includes space for an image, YouTube video, Google calendar, or Google map.

Just like header text, all text boxes added through these elements can change their shape and size. To change line spacing, add indentation, or create code-style formatting, click the three dots to the right of the editing bar. The keyboard shortcuts you use to edit text in Google Docs also work in Google Sites.

Google Sites Custom Domain

As of  September 2021, as far as I know, there was no way to set up a custom domain directly in Google Sites. However, you can work around the solution by using the domain mapping feature provided by Google Domains or another domain registrar
Here is a general overview of the process:

  • Buy a custom domain from a domain registrar like Google Domains, Namecheap or GoDaddy.
  • Open your Google Sites and go to  site settings.
  • Find the Custom Domain Map or Set Custom URL option.
  • Set up domain mapping according to Google Sites instructions. This usually involves adding a CNAME record or some DNS settings to the domain registrar's control panel.
  • Verify domain ownership using the given steps.

Wait for the changes to take effect, which may take some time (usually a few hours to a day).

Please note that since my expertise ends in September 2021, there may have been updates or changes to how Google sites work. For the most up-to-date and detailed information on setting up a custom domain, we recommend consulting the official Google Sites documentation or support channels.
